Bare roots have stronger, more established root systems because the energy hasn't been divided between plant and soil. They're also lighter (cheaper to ship) and more affordable. Potted plants look fuller immediately but often need years to develop the same root strength as a bare root.

Early spring or fall is ideal when soil is cool and moisture is abundant. Bare roots establish better in cool weather. You can plant in summer if you water regularly, but avoid extreme heat.

Most hostas thrive in full shade to partial shade. Some varieties tolerate morning sun, but avoid hot afternoon sun. They prefer dappled shade under trees or the north side of buildings.

Hostas love moisture-retentive, organic-rich soil. Mix compost or aged leaf mold into your planting hole. They tolerate various soil types but prefer slightly acidic, well-draining soil that stays consistently moist (not waterlogged).

Hostas are slow-growing perennials. Most reach mature size in 3-5 years. However, they leaf out quickly in spring and will make a noticeable impact by the end of the first growing season. They get bigger and more impressive every year!
