Texas Appraisal Trainee Licensing Requirements

  • 87 Hours of Qualifying EducationAs of January 1, 2026, Texas requires 87 hours to become an Appraiser Trainee — up from 79 hours, reflecting the new AQB-mandated Valuation Bias and Fair Housing requirement. This deal covers all required hours.
  • Background Check RequiredSubmit fingerprints through the Texas Department of Public Safety as part of your application.
  • State License ApplicationApply for your Appraiser Trainee credential through TALCB's REALM Portal upon course completion. No licensing exam is required at the Trainee level.
  • Supervisory AppraiserLine up a supervisory appraiser holding an active Texas Licensed Residential, Certified Residential, or Certified General credential, and log required experience hours. The 4-Hour Appraiser Trainee and Supervisory Appraiser Course (ATSA) must be completed by both of you before experience hours can begin.
