Cities That Do Fall the Best

BY: Rashawn Mitchner |Sep 6, 2016

It’s fall again. By now you’ve likely put the swimsuits away and taken the sweaters out. Well, go put them in a suitcase ‘cause we’ve got some ideas for taking a vacation in one of these cities with the best fall activities in the country.

All Things Apple | Biglerville, Pennsylvania

Cities that Do Fall the Best Apples 1 jpgThe candy apple is a favorite fall treat. How about apple pancakes, apple cider, and apple syrup, too? Get your fill of the stuff—plus inventive eats like apple pizza and fried apple slices—at the long-running National Apple Harvest Festival in Biglerville. All the hard work of apple picking is done, leaving only fun stuff such as pie-baking and -eating contests. Other activities at the event (named 1 of the 19 best fall festivals by _Country Living_ magazine) include riding ponies and making scarecrows.

When to go: The fest takes place the first two weekends of October each year; this year’s dates are October 1–2 and 8–9.

Leaf Peeping with a View | Asheville, North Carolina

Cities that Do Fall the Best Leaves 1 jpgNew England’s not the only region of the country with spectacular fall foliage. For a beautiful adventure in nature, follow the Blue Ridge Parkway about 30 miles northeast from Asheville as it curves around the edge of Mount Mitchell State Park and you’ll reach the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. From Mount Mitchell’s observation deck at 6,684 feet, you can see up to 85 miles away on a clear day. Hit the hiking trails to see the brilliant colors up close, then warm up by the fireplace in one of the park’s picnic shelters.

When to go: Fall color in North Carolina usually peaks in mid- to late October, depending on the elevation.

Most Complex Corn Maze | Dixon, California

At 60 acres, the corn maze at Cool Patch Pumpkins snagged the Guinness World Record for the largest corn maze in 2014. There are no monsters prowling through the cornstalks, but getting lost in the labyrinth can be scary—some visitors called 911 last year when they couldn't find their way out. If you’d rather not try it, you can go on a tractor-pulled hayride and pick from dozens of types of pumpkins instead.

When to go: The farm’s open from September 17 through early November this year.

Football Fandom | Ann Arbor, Michigan

When it comes to packing fans into the stands, the University of Michigan wins. Michigan Stadium—aptly nicknamed "the Big House"—holds 107,601 people, making it the largest US stadium. Come early to stake out a tailgating spot nearby; pack your own grub, or have Ann Arbor favorite Zingerman’s Deli deliver right to you. Don’t know the words to the school’s fight song? You will after hearing thousands of maize-and-blue-clad fans shouting “Hail to the victors!” at the game.

When to go: The Wolverines play Michigan State for the Paul Bunyan trophy on October 29 and face off against Ohio State on November 26, the last Saturday of the Big Ten season.
