Eyelash extensions, once a beauty secret of celebrities like Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian, have crossed over and onto the eyelids of regular folk. Quality extensions are carefully applied by a licensed aesthetician, come in a variety of natural and synthetic materials, and beat store-bought falsies in quality, safety, and natural appearance.

How long does the application process take?

Getting a full set of eyelash extensions can take up to three hours. Most sets take closer to two hours to complete. It takes a while because the aesthetician is applying one lash extension at a time—one for each natural lash. Half sets and touchups take considerably less time.

How long do the lashes last?

The lifespan of the extensions hinges on the growth cycle of your lashes. Lashes regenerate naturally, growing and eventually falling out every six to eight weeks. Most reputable salons suggest that extensions can last up to six weeks with proper care, but touchups are recommended every three weeks to keep the extensions looking their best.

What are the lashes made out of?

Most salons stock a variety of lash types and will sometimes even use different lengths and materials on one eyelid to achieve the perfect look for their clients. The three most common types, however, are synthetic, synthetic silk, and mink hair. Each offers its own unique look and feel, with mink considered the lightest, most luxurious, and subsequently the most expensive.

What are the aftercare instructions?

You should always consult with your aesthetician and heed their aftercare instructions. However, most will advise the same basic steps, which include:

• Avoid getting brand-new lashes wet for 24–48 hours
• Avoid sitting in a sauna, working out, or getting very sweaty through other means for that same period of time
• Near your eyes, avoid using oil-based products, any products that include glycol, and waterproof mascara
• Avoid anything that’s moisture-rich, such as lotion, shampoo, conditioner, etc. “Some of my addicted clients use swimming goggles while showering,” said eyelash-extensions expert Liv Contreras.

Can I still wear makeup with eyelash extensions?

To some extent, yes. Many aestheticians will tell you not to use oil-based or waterproof mascara, which can dissolve the most commonly used bonding agents. Application of mascara can also tug at the extensions, causing them to fall out sooner. In general, you should consider water-based makeup and water-based makeup remover. Talk to the staff at your salon and see if they recommend any specific cosmetics to help keep your new lashes fluttering strong.

How many do I need?

Experienced aestheticians apply one extension per natural lash. So if you’re getting a full set, you’ll need as many extensions as you have eyelashes. You can also opt for partial extensions, which are often offered in half sets or three-quarter sets. This meticulous application process helps keep lashes from clumping together in a look some experts call “gross.”
