It's October, and Halloween is on the horizon. Large spiders and cobwebs cover landscaping, skeletons are perched in shadowy windows, and jack-o'-lanterns sneer at passers-by from porches. Celebrate the spookiest day of the year by traveling to one of the country’s most haunted cities, where you can soak up eerie historical facts and rendezvous with apparitions. The stops in each city are rated on a scale of 1 to 5 howls, with 5 being the creepiest.
Previously, we took you to Portland. The second stop is haunted Savannah.
Keep an Eye Out for a Ghastly Feline
Davenport House Museum
324 East State Street

Visitors have seen the ghost of a young girl at the Davenport House Museum, a nearly 200-year-old building that was once a private residence and later a rooming house. The home has another phantom, one that’s a bit different from the others in town: a cat. Watch for the spectral feline scampering from room to room while you tour the house.

Have a Beer Among Spirits
Moon River Brewing Company
21 West Bay Street
10-minute walk from Davenport House Museum

Moon River Brewing Company’s building, constructed in 1821, was originally the home of the City Hotel. The hotel served Savannah’s high society until the doors closed in 1864, not long before General William Tecumseh Sherman overtook the city during the Civil War. It was later used to quarantine yellow-fever patients, many of whom—mostly children—died on the upper floors. You might see the youthful spirits downstairs in the pub.

Try to Sleep Through a Lovelorn Ghost’s Wailing
17Hundred90 Inn & Restaurant
307 East President Street
8-minute walk from Johnson Square

Anne, a famed apparition at 17Hundred90 Inn & Restaurant, is said to be a former employee or resident. Legend goes that she was so torn up over the loss of a loved one that she threw herself over a second-floor balcony. Avoid room 204 if you’re a light sleeper—that’s where you’re most likely to hear Anne sobbing.
