Nine Home-Bar Basics You'll Need for Your Cocktail Party

Let’s get real: the most important part of holiday-party prep is readying the bar. And if you wait for Santa to bring you what you need, it’ll be too late. We’ve rounded up nine home-bar basics from Goods and ideel that’ll keep the drinks flowing all night.

(By the way, it’s not considered self-gifting if you shop in the name of holiday spirits.)

1. Satin-copper wall rack, Old Dutch ($89.99); 2. Odyssey cut-glass decanter set with four wine glasses, Circleware ($24.99); 3. Wine-bottle stoppers, Godinger ($19.99 for set of two); 4. Metallic lace cocktail glasses, Patina Vie ($19.99 for set of four); 5. Burnished-metal square server, Donna Karan Lenox ($34.99); 6. Mason jar shot glasses ($9.99 for set of four) 7. Stainless-steel barware set, Berghoff International ($29.99); 8. Solid copper mugs ($39.99 for set of two; 9. Condiment set, Nambe ($99.99)

1. Storage

Unless you’re working with a man-cave-style wraparound, your home bar is potentially short on storage space. Affix a hanging rack under your bar top, or expand to the nearest wall.

2. Decanters

A couple of decanters keep a small bar from getting cluttered by too many liquor bottles. Look for sets that include glasses and for aerated versions that’ll work for wine and liquor.

3. Bottle stoppers

Find novelty bottle stoppers that recall your favorite drink. These miniature Chrysler and Empire State buildings are ideal for lovers of Manhattan, while tiny Eiffel Towers (pictured at top, also available on Goods) will keep an oenophile’s champagne bubbly.

4. Vintage-inspired glassware

Patina details mimic the look of vintage tumblers, and newer designs are generally dishwasher safe. Shorter glasses like those pictured above also make for beautiful, romantic votives when you’re mixing drinks for two.

5. Serving tray

Not only are trays useful for bringing guests their drinks, they also help to organize glassware on the cart. A metallic finish adds a little holiday shimmer.

6. Shot glasses

They don’t have to scream “frat party,” especially if you find them in a more modern or charming design. Plus, shot glasses are helpful for measuring drinks.

7. Barware set

This is an absolute necessity, as it stores all the essential tools in one tidy, space-saving station. Fortunately, barware sets are generally less expensive than purchasing tools à la carte.

8. Mugs

Though traditionally used for moscow mules, metal mugs are great for keeping anything cold, including beer. Hang them from storage racks by their handles to conserve space.

9. Catchalls

Small bowls are perfect catchalls for everything from garnishes to beer nuts.
