Miami isn’t called the Cruise Ship Capital of the World for nothing. Millions of visitors set off on island-hopping adventures from here; in fact, it’s where industry giants Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International are both headquartered. But before you set sail, you might want to consider giving yourself an extra day to explore your vibrant departure city. Our itinerary for one day in Miami will help you hit the must-sees in speedy fashion, getting you to the dock well before the bon voyages start the following day.

9 a.m. | Stiltsville in Biscayne Bay
Driving time: about 30 minutes from Miami International Airport
Though not nearly as well known as the art-deco hotels on Ocean Drive, Stiltsville—a collection of wooden houses propped up on stilts above the crystalline waters of Biscayne Bay—is one of Miami’s coolest sights. On your way back to the mainland, hit up Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park to enjoy the beach without all the parties and crowds.

12 p.m. | Little Havana
Driving time: about 30 minutes from Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park
Stroll up and down Calle Ocho to get a taste of Cuba without the passport. Savor the aromas of cigar shops, watch a game of dominos in Máximo Gómez Park, and snack on grilled pork sandwiches and ceviche at Versailles.
1 p.m. | HistoryMiami
Driving time: about 15 minutes from Versailles
Brush up on local history and folklore at this museum covering everything from the land’s ancient ancestors to Cuban refugees of the 1950s.
3 p.m. | Wynwood Arts District
Driving time: about 10 minutes from HistoryMiami
Peruse more than 70 contemporary art galleries or head straight for the neighborhood’s crown jewel—Wynwood Walls, a showcase for eye-popping graffiti and street art.

5 p.m. | The Art Deco District and South Beach
Driving time: about 20 minutes from Wynwood Walls
Ocean Drive is at the top of every visitor’s to-do list for a reason. Take a spin along the famous thoroughfare for a glimpse of the glamour, neon lights, and stunning architecture that Miami dreams are made of. It doesn’t hurt that the world-renowned South Beach runs right alongside.
7 p.m. | Check into your hotel
If your cruise boards later in the day, spend the night at South Beach’s Hotel Ocean so you can stay close to the action. If you’ve got an early departure, head to the Holiday Inn Port of Miami, which is so close to port that you can roll out of bed and right up the gangplank.
