Things to Do in New York City: Weekend of June 13–15The 2013 Jazz Age Lawn Party. Photo by Whitney Browne. An ice-cream social, Jazz Age orchestra, and pet-friendly ferris wheel top this weekend's list of events around the city. Not enough? Check Groupon for more things to do in New York. Jazz Age Lawn Party Governors Island Saturday, June 14, and Sunday, June 15, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Cocktails mixed with St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur fuel this all-day bash, which recalls Roaring Twenties splendor with events ranging from a charleston dance contest to a display of vintage Victrolas. VIP packages with names like “Great Gatsby” and “Bonnie and Clyde” roll in extras such as champagne, parasols, or a dinner from a private chef. Grab your tickets for this event soon—general admission for Saturday is already sold out. ($35–$300; buy tickets here. Kids younger than 12 enter free.) Brooklyn Farmacy & Cacao Prieto Ice-Cream Social Red Hook | Botanica, 220 W. Conover St. Saturday, June 14, 12 p.m.–2 p.m. The co-owners of old-timey soda shop Brooklyn Farmacy packed their first book, The Soda Fountain, with historical tidbits as well as classic ice-cream-drink recipes. (Get a peek at one of them here.) This Sunday, they’re taking a little of both to a cocktail bar in Red Hook, where organic chocolatiers Cacao Prieto cohost what the soda jerks are calling “the sweetest stop” on their book tour. The reason? Each member of the audience gets to sip their choice of sample drink: boozy bourbon-vanilla floats for grownups or nonalcoholic ice-cream drinks for kids. ($15 adults, $10 kids; buy tickets here) Thee Oh Sees at McCarren Park Williamsburg | Bedford Ave. & 12th St. Saturday, June 14, 1 p.m.–6 p.m. Widely thought to be on hiatus since 2013, high-energy psych-rockers Thee Oh Sees shocked fans by dropping a full-length album this spring. With their reputation for high-octane, crowd-pleasing shows, the San Francisco–based band is bound to pack the park with spectators. Get there early to check out openers The Blind Shake and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and secure yourself a good seat. (free; RSVP here) Pet Day Coney Island | Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park Saturday, June 14, 12 p.m.–7 p.m. Pets ride Deno’s famous Wonder Wheel for free during this seven-hour celebration of felines, canines, and other animals with oddly affectionate human roommates. The real highlight is the pet costume contest at 2 p.m., when furry friends strut their stuff along the boardwalk, vying for prizes that include Deno’s day passes and gift certificates to Petco. (Entry into the costume contest requires a donation of two cans of pet food; see the application here) Sweet Spot Festival Harlem | Jackie Robinson Bandshell, 145th St. & Bradhurst Ave. Sunday, June 15, 12 p.m.–6 p.m. Soul Summit DJs spin retro tunes during this Father’s Day–themed street festival, which includes food trucks, kids’ art activities, and a pop-up vintage market.
