About Colonial Lantern Tours

From the Pilgrim cemetary at Burial Hill to the shipwrecks that litter the Atlantic coast, Massachusetts has ghosts and legends older than the country itself. The experienced guides at Colonial Lantern Tours make it their mission to unearth these historical secrets, leading groups on walking tours that visit significant sites in Plymouth, Sandwich, and Boston. In addition to tracking down New England's best supernatural haunts, the guides also lead holiday-themed tours that explore bygone colonial traditions. Their Thanksgiving Stroll retraces the steps of the area's first Pilgrim settlers, and their Holiday Traditions in Old Plymouth tour warms groups with hot cocoa as they learn about early Christmas customs including the celebration of Forefather's Day and the mayor's annual winter leg-wrestling tournament.

We especially liked being able to handpick cranberries in the bog and talking to a very experienced cranberry grower about the process of growing and taking cranberries to market.

Our tour guide Tom Finn was extremely knowledgable and friendly. It was incredibly insightful to meet cranberry farmers in the middle of their harvest season, and I learned so many fun facts about cranberry farming and the industry that I am turning into a lesson for third graders!

The tour was very nice. I have one tiny suggestion for when they are giving the tours next year. They should try and put the amount of berries in a better perspective than the barrels or crates they go in. For example, if a field is 3 aces, or 5 acres, they explained that it would produce so many (from 1 to 7) tons of berries but you really never can gague how many berries could come off of a field. If the tour guide could better understand the size of a field (say 5 acres, 15 acres) and how many of those standard bags of ocean spray cranberries that you find in the store, it would help. So it would be more informative if he or she said, this five acre plot will make aproximately 20,000 of the bags that you find at stop and shop for $2 a piece, or all the way up th e140,000 bags (hence the 1 to 7 ratio explained during the tour. The tour was very informative. Overall excellent time. Oh, one more thought. The bus pulled away so fast from the second farm that we lost it and couldn't find the third farm. That was the only bummer.

This tour was extremely unorganized and misleading. The guides were unprofessional and did not have a good relationship with the farmers and farms we went to and it was really uncomfortable. The tour guides had poor communication with each other so repeated information was the only thing we ever heard. There was no itinerary and the tour was unwelcoming because of the poor relationship with the farms. I would highly recommend you do NOT waste your day doing this.
