Our guide/owner was great! Very good liquors too!
What a great experience! Scott was an amazing host. Learned a lot about the history of different spirits, the process of making them and how they are different from main stream spirits! I will definitely to back when my family comes to town. If you're looking for something different to do, this is it!
It was a really good tour. He was knowledgeable, friendly and out going.
This was an incredible experience! Scott was so knowledgeable, humorous, engaging and generous! There was a large group that day and he made each person feel a part of the program. Could not have been happier spending the afternoon and my husband’s birthday taking this tour! Highly recommend!!!
Knowledgable staff, great liquor, learned a lot!
Great experience! Our host was very informative and friendly, thoroughly enjoyed!:)
Very informative and helpful... Especially if you were not really a spirits drinker
Super informative and a lot of fun!
This tour and tasting were fantastic. The tour began with Scott, the tour guide and owner, giving everyone a beer from their brewery and explaining distilling and how the different spirits are made. Then you get to tour the actually still which was really cool and learn why their liquor is superior. Finally, you get to taste the 6 TOPO spirits: TOPO Vodka, Gin, Eight Oak Carolina Whiskey, Reserve Carolina Straight Wheat Whiskey, Spiced Rum, and Moonshine. The sampling was eye opening, especially comparing Tito's Handmade Vodka with the TOPO Vodka. Tito's smelled like rubbing alcohol and had the hard vodka burn when tasted. TOPO's smelled like vanilla butter cream frosting and tasted slightly sweet and clean with less of a burn. We ended up buying a bottle of TOPO Vodka, Eight Oak Whiskey, Spiced Rum, Moonshine and the Carolina Hurricane Mix (fruit juice mixer). We were only planning on buying the spiced rum but everything tasted so good we couldn't resist. It is impressive that TOPO makes all the vodka, gin, whiskey, rum and moonshine right there in Chapel Hill! They are all organic and they source most of the ingredients from local, North Carolina farms. (The organic sugar cane for the rum has to come from Florida.)
The tour and tasting took about 1 hour and 45 minutes so it might be long for some people. My husband and I are science geeks so we thoroughly enjoyed all the details Scott provided and it was more like a class than just a tour. My husband and I have toured over a half dozen breweries, a ciderie (hard cider) and a meadery (mead - honey wine) and touring the TOPO distillery was by far our favorite. We would highly recommend touring TOPO and we plan on taking family and friends.
Really knowledgeable and passionate. He felt really invested in locally sourcing organic products and does a really good job explaining some of the unique obsitcales invloved in getting into a craft distilleries
