About Voices From Beyond Tours

Voices From Beyond Tours explores the city of Elmhurst, a Chicago suburb much like any other. Filled with urban legends and ghost stories, the tours offer a glance into the city's rich and chilling past, while also offering a fun and enriching historical lesson.

A Chicagoland native and history buff, Ray Johnson explores the legends and mysteries swirling around the Windy City—which fill his book Chicago’s Haunt Detective, the blog he writes for ChicagoNow, and his narration during Voices From Beyond tours. While leading walks through some of Elmhurst’s spookiest sites, including the Elmhurst College Mill Theatre, the White Birch homestead, and Cottage Hill, Ray looks to the expertise of fellow partners and paranormal experts—Kirsten Tillman and Beth Howe. Both handle the technical side of ghost hunting, utilizing electronic-voice-phenomenon equipment or EVPs to capture the sounds of the past. With their passion for the paranormal, Howe and Tillman present their research to fellow tourists allowing them a peek into existence of the phenomena.

My only complaint will be that the last stop on the tour is across the street from train tracks and when they set up the video it was very hard to hear due to the trains passing by.

Very nice and informative. EVP recordings at the end gave more credence to their investigative work

Who knew that Elmhurst had enough weird stuff to fill a 2hr ghost tour. Very interesting. A good long walk. A few technical difficulties at the end, but all in all a very nice time.

I really enjoyed the tour! Very educational and creepy! I have two suggestions. 1) It was hard to hear and see the video at the end of the tour. If possible, it would be better inside. The noise from the trains and cars, plus having a bunch of people standing in front took away from the effect. 2) The pictures in the video were extremely distracting. I appreciate the desire to make it "spooky" but using images from World of Warcraft and unrelated movies took away the realism of the recordings. Other than that, I had a blast!

I thought the tour was informative once it started (20 minutes late). There were way too many people on the tour (50+ people) in the group. It was difficult to hear the tour guides because of the large group and low volume speakers. The EVP presentation was ok, but some of the clip art images were cheesy. Make sure you go to the restroom before hand. It's a 2 hour walking tour with no breaks.

Learning the history about the different sites was interesting and pretty frightful. Listening to the EVP footage from a separate investigation, however, was not interesting or frightful because the supposed "voices" sounded fake or the "words" being said by spirits seemed construed.
