***** Sheila, our tour guide conducted a lovely, informative tour of the three homes on site at Polymath Park.. The visionary and contractor Tom Papinchak's siting of the "Duncan House" on the property is fantastic. The house site highlights the natural beauty of the Western Pennsylvania Laurel Highlands geologic features and forest. When you look out the rear windows or step onto the rear patio even the adults want to trek the hillside and explore those wondrous boulders which are natural to the site. Tom's improvement to the Duncan House includes the "Wright choice" of the stone on the exterior as opposed to the concrete block which had been the Duncan family choice. The Maryland stone enhances the home dramatically from its original concrete block. A choice of stone was available to any client for Wright's design when this house was originally built. The Usonian homes were designed for the everyday family, not the multi-millionaire retailer or the multi-millionaire industrialist.. If you are looking for another Fallingwater, this is not it. The Polymath Park tour is highly recommended to note the architectural differences and similarities of Wright and Talisien designed homes not to mention to enjoy the beauty of Western Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands any time of year. Unlike Fallingwater, if you are 5'11" of taller you can stand tall in these three homes and not have to bend over as one does in Fallingwater. Students of architecture would do well to view and study these buildings in situ to understand the problems involved in handling the various roles that the natural elements play in the need for upkeep of these homes. These homes are an excellent teaching tool not just because of the design but because of their age. They show areas that become prominent for repairs and hence, the architectural student can learn to incorporate improvements for known problem areas into original designs that improve structures for the long haul. The homes show the need for handling roof rainwater, ice, and ice melt. Some of these buildings without roof gutters can play havoc to people going in and out of the building, to the structural elements of the roof and to the building's foundation. In viewing and studying these homes, the student of architecture can obtain the foresight for design which may eliminate costly, time consuming maintenance for newly designed buildings. The placement of these homes in the Laurel Highlands of Western Pennsylvania as opposed to a city also denotes the need to the architectural student the requirement to obtain viable drinking water via deep wells when these homes are sited, the ability to safely handle sewage and the need to handle rain water runoff. Recommendation: Take the tour, you will enjoy it. If you meet Mr. Tom Papinchak working on one of the homes, he has a wealth of knowledge both historical and hands-on to share. We plan to return in another season to see the changes the seasons play on the site.
