About Birdman Academy

Birdman Academy takes its name from the pseudonym of its founder, Kevin Koonce. The Birdman estimates that he has trained thousands of hang-gliding lessons, and during that time he’s taught nearly 8,000 first-timers. Currently, he nests at the height of the Mountain, a spot known for what the Academy calls, "legendary conditions." This means consistently smooth winds, which are ideal for training new hang-gliders, paragliders, and baby pterodactyls recently thawed from blocks of prehistoric ice. Instructors that have traveled and flown around the world guide patrons through their experiences.

Kevin is wonderful!!! I felt so safe. He is very intentional and timely with his flying. He has had so many cool experiences and it's nice to be going with someone that has so much experience. Would definitely recommend!

Birdman was awesome to work with in scheduling. The ride was so fun and surprisingly educational. It was so interesting to learn about the wind patterns. We would highly recommend!

This was a really fun experience! It was really easy to get it set up even when weather didn't want to cooperate. The guy that we went flying with did a great job with instructions and made sure that the flight went great!

My boyfriend and I went paragliding with Kevin in mid-June and it was AWESOME! He was super easy to communicate with (he will have to reschedule if the wind isn't good) and way fun. Kevin is funny and definitely knows what he is doing. We felt very safe and confident in the air. He had us take pictures and video on a GoPro and sent us the footage and even let us each steer.

This was an incredible experience. Our instructor was thorough in teaching us and made it very clear if the wind was not ideal, we would not be flying that day and I'm grateful for the transparency from the professionals! I highly recommend listening to them if they say the wind isn't good enough for flying. After the wind was at a good spot for me to go up, I could actually feel why the higher winds wouldn't have been suitable for someone my size. I was nervous at first but after watching some other flights and learning more about flying from our instructor, I felt more than ready to go up and didn't have an ounce of worry. Once you're up there, it is SO incredibly fun! I recommend this to anyone who's willing to: *listen to the instructor and follow their lead *is patient with waiting for the right winds for you to go up *is ready for a great time!
