About Cape Henry Lighthouse

Cape Henry Lighthouse stands as a beacon of American history and heritage. This iconic lighthouse, authorized by George Washington and overseen by Alexander Hamilton, marks the first federally funded public works project of the newly formed United States government. Situated near the pivotal 'First Landing' site where English settlers first set foot on their way to Jamestown, it offers visitors a tangible connection to the nation's origins. Managed by Preservation Virginia since 1930, ongoing efforts ensure this historical landmark continues to educate future generations about its rich past.

Cool experience. Light security check required (Real ID or passport, bags and pockets, metal detector). Shuttle bus takes you into the base from security and from there you can explore the marked off area. Lighthouse was awesome! Lots of history

We had a nice time. It really helped that I had read someone else's comments ahead. Make sure you have a real ID on your driver's license. Don't carry any large bags as they will need to search them. But since you are shuttled in, make sure you have anything you will absolutely need with you. Go to the restroom at the gas station inside the base. They had Fort Story tshirts for a good price.

The 2 lighthouses are beautiful and the displays are well done and informative but they are located within the bounds of Fort Story and the imposed security measures seem excessive and unduly restrictive on persons just looking for an encounter with history. Visitors must climb 79 stairs to get to the base of the oldest tower and the optional walking tour requires an additional $16 payment!

Before arrival make sure you have a real ID issued with a Star or a passport otherwise you are not allowed to enter, as it’s a NAVAL BASE. Once you go thru security check… it’s a sight not to be missed. Personnel is well informed and courteous. The view from atop the LIGHTHOUSE on a clear day is awesome!

Great piece of history. The guides were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Just know it is on an actual Naval base and if you do not have a Real ID, you will not be allowed entrance.

This is a must do stop while visiting Virginia Beach. The stairs are not to difficult.
