- About the tour:
- The 2020 edition of the Apostle Islands ice cave tours will start at the Houghton Point ice caves in Chequamegon Bay on Lake Superior. One of the unique features of this location is the ice forming process, which here is significantly faster and makes the ice thicker and safer for travel than anywhere else in the Apostle Islands.
- These Houghton Point Ice Caves open up in late January to early February and offer an opportunity to experience the Apostle Islands Ice Caves without having to deal with the crowds, parking issues and unpredictable conditions at the Meyers Beach ice caves.
- Safety standards: To maintain safety the organizer utilizes the same ice-thickness standards as the National Park Service and thus requires at least 12″ of ice on the surface of the lake before tours begin.
- Supervision: Each tour is supervised by a guide that informs about the ice conditions and areas which have to be avoided. The guide can also suggest the location of the most scenic ice caves
- Exploration on your own is allowed as long as all participating individuals stay behind the guide and let the guide know that they intend to do so beforehand.
