Monterey, California: Scenic Beaches and Marine Wildlife on the Pacific Coast

The city of Monterey is at Monterey Bay’s southern end, in an area considered one of the world’s most scenic thanks to its rugged cliffs and dramatic ocean views. Author John Steinbeck lived for several years in the neighboring town of Pacific Grove, and he immortalized this part of central California in works such as East of Eden and Of Mice and Men. In Cannery Row, Steinbeck depicted the Monterey fish-canning industry at the turn of the 20th century. Today, a tourist destination of the same name houses souvenir shops and eateries right where the sardine factories used to be.

Among the city’s must-see attractions is the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Its mesmerizing displays include a living kelp forest filled with leopard sharks and wolf eels. For those who want to get closer to the sea, there’s the oceanfront Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail, where sea lions sunbathe on the rocks and otters play in the surf. A variety of whales pass by the shores of Monterey all year; visitors might also spot a few dolphins from aboard one of the popular harbor cruises.

The property was awesome. Working with Groupon to adjust the dates was awful. Our flights out were changed, as many have been post COVID. Groupon was really hard to reach and get a response from. By the time we connected, the option for adjusting the dates at the property was not a possibility. We were only able to stay one night when we had paid for two. Very disappointed in Groupon.

The partial view room are on the main floor so they are great. You walk right out and down stairs to the beach.

Room was soooooooooooooo nasty!!!! Carpet was moist, air smelled like mold. The air in the room was so thick and stinky. The lobby is deceiving. Rooms are crap. Everything else about the place was great. Oh and they won’t let you have a cot in the room due to fire safety…total BS

I (LOVED) this place when it was Best Western years ago! I think its location on ON THE BEACH, can’t be beat by any other Hotel in Monterey seriously! I can think COST may have been too much for BW? The rooms were clean! Beds were OK, the door STUCK on top to bathroom! There was no Propane for 3 Fire Pits! Need a few more Luggage Racks! Please fix both elevators! You’ll have the BEST Hotel!!
