Lake Placid, New York: Mountain Recreation and Small-Town Charm in the Adirondacks

Nestled in northeastern New York’s Adirondack Mountains, the village of Lake Placid is actually set on the shores of Mirror Lake, just south of Lake Placid proper. Year-round, folks flock to the area to take advantage of its outdoor recreation and to see the site of the “Miracle on Ice”—the US hockey team’s heart-stopping upset victory over the Soviets in 1980.

Less than 10 miles away, Whiteface Lake Placid ski resort boasts one of the largest vertical drops east of the Rockies for downhill skiing and snowboarding, and ice-fishers can be seen trying their luck on the surface of the lake. Come springtime, winter sports give way to kayaking trips and scenic hikes along leafy backcountry trails. Along Lake Placid’s Main Street, you’ll find a string of boutiques and curio shops, along with galleries and workshops where you can watch artisans blowing glass. Wine-tasting rooms and bakeries offer sampling of local flavors.

Awesome location! Right in the middle of downtown so you can walk everywhere, which is helpful bc parking is tough (hotel has a parking lot). Clean, quiet, staff was helpful, pretty modern room. Bed was comfy! Would definitely stay here again!

Got the king sized room with the lake view. Everything is a walk away but my only issue was parking. Parking is very limited and while their is lots you can pay to park in, they got very busy very quick. Because of this we stayed local and didn’t move the car all week. Besides for that it was an incredible vacation.

Hotel was right in the middle of everything. You can walk to all the restaurants, shops and the public beach. Beds were really comfortable. The only complaint I have is that we couldn’t find an ice machine and the pictures on their website was a little deceiving. I though we would have a nice view from our balcony but all we saw was the parking lot and a few trees. Parking is tight as well.
