About John Frieda

Now known internationally for his extensive line of haircare products, John Frieda’s beginnings were humble enough: as a teenager in England, he worked part-time at his father’s salon. He had taken the job to avoid schoolwork, yet he soon proved to have a canny understanding of all things hair. In the late 1960s, still a teenager, Frieda began an apprenticeship at the House of Leonard, a major London salon headed by Leonard Lewis, a protégé of Vidal Sassoon. In the late ’80s, having achieved resounding success—he had styled the hair of Princess Diana and pop star Lulu—Frieda decided to take his talents to New York City, where he worked to launch a line of products that bore his name.

The original Frizz-Ease serum appeared in 1990, and it was a near-instant success. Women and men who complained of eternal frizz finally found an easy solution that left their hair soft, smooth, and manageable. Soon, Frieda expanded his line to include shampoos, conditioners, and, in 1998, Sheer Blonde products, another hit. Today, Frieda’s line is a mainstay of beauty publications and awards lists; his products appear regularly in Allure’s Best of Beauty collection and other top publications, such as Vogue and InStyle.
