About Museum of Chinese in America

The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) was opened in 1980 with a lofty goal: to preserve and present over a century of Chinese American history. The museum presents and explores the diverse history, heritage, and culture of people of Chinese descent in the United States through innovative exhibitions, educational initiatives, and public programs.

  • Size: a 16,000-sq.-ft. museum with permanent and rotating exhibits and a collection that includes more than 65,000 artifacts, photos, and more

  • The Building: a remodeled machinery factory warehouse from the early 1900s designed by world-renowned artist Maya Lin - a 2015 U.S. Department of State Medal of Arts recipient

  • Permanent Exhibition: With a Single Step: Stories in the Making of America is designed around the museum's sky-lit courtyard to resemble a classical Chinese courtyard house

  • Special Exhibition: Ed Young's Bright Worlds: Gesture and Feeling in 60 Years of Picture Books for Children.

    • ✓ Running May 14 - September 13
    • ✓ For over 60 years, Ed Young (1931–2023) was a towering figure in children's literature, celebrated for his inventive artistry and his ability to challenge audiences with pictorial and moral complexity across more than 100 books. This first U.S. retrospective traces Young's journey from his upbringing in Shanghai and Hong Kong to his storied career in America, which began in 1962 and eventually earned him the Caldecott Medal for his iconic Chinese folklore retelling, Lon Po Po. By showcasing original artwork from 15 of his most significant projects alongside personal photos and sketchbooks, the exhibition highlights how Young's immigrant experience and personal history infused his storytelling with a potency that garnered him the field's highest honors.
  • Hidden Gem: exhibition includes replica of a 1930s Chinatown general store

  • Special Programs: drop-in art-making workshops for all ages, signature Family Festivals, curator talks, film screenings, performances, members-only events, and professional development workshops for educators
