The 2014-2015 Washington Wizards head to the court with a re-tooled roster boasting a mix of talented youth and savvy veterans that earned them a spot in the top 10 of ESPN’s NBA power rankings. They’ve also got the momentum of last year’s campaign on their side, which saw Washington snag their best record in nearly a decade and break past the Chicago Bulls into the second round of the playoffs. Washington’s youthful core is returning, including their ankle-breaking point guard that averaged nearly 20 points and 9 assists last year. But youth also needs mentorship, and the offseason acquisition of a 10-time all-star small forward promises to give the young team guidance in matters such as postseason success and which cities boast the loudest fans and quietest libraries.

Although the Washington Wizards have changed monikers four times since their founding—they’ve previously played under the banner of the Packers, Zephyrs, and Bullets, the latter of which took home the 1978 NBA World Championship—the franchise has conjured slam dunks in Washington for more than three decades. Several former players have been named among the league’s 50 greatest, leaving a mark on the NBA as indelible as the fake beard superglued to Merlin’s face. Today, throngs of up to 22,000 fans gather at the Verizon Center to cheer on the team swathed in their iconic red, white, and blue uniforms.
