The institution originally opened in 1909 with a few modest downtown displays before expanding its footprint directly into Hermann Park. Today, the facility operates as an expansive, multi-story science center that actively handles millions of global visitors every single year.

The main campus boasts five floors of permanent exhibits, offering deep dives into astronomy, paleontology, and Texas wildlife. Visitors can also explore rotating special exhibitions, witness exotic creatures in the Cockrell Butterfly Center, and journey through the cosmos at the Burke Baker Planetarium or Giant Screen Theatre. The museum's reach extends with satellite locations, including HMNS at Sugar Land and the George Observatory, home to one of the largest public telescopes in the country.
