Pen Turning - Learn to make custom pens on a lathe
Learn the techniques of turning wooden and acrylic blocks into beautiful, custom-made ink pens. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced woodworker, this class will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to create your own unique ink pens.
What You'll Learn:
- Basic wood turning techniques: Learn the basics of wood turning, including how to properly mount the wood or acrylic block on the lathe, how to make cuts, and how to shape the pen body.
- Cutting and preparing your wood pen turning blanks.
- Assembly and finishing: Learn how to assemble the pen components, including the ink refill and hardware, and how to finish your pen with sanding, polishing, and buffing.
What You'll Take Home:
- Your own custom-made ink pens: At the end of the class, you'll take home at least 2 unique ink pens, handcrafted by you! Show off your creations to friends and family, or even sell them as a fun hobby or side business.
- A new skill: With the knowledge and skills you'll gain from this class, you'll be able to make custom-made ink pens for years to come. Plus, you'll have the opportunity to continue learning and exploring new techniques and designs with our wood turning membership options.
Duration: The class is up to 4 hours long and takes place on any available evening or weekend in our workshop.
Prerequisites: No prior experience is necessary
Safety: Must wear jeans, long sleeved shirt, close-toed shoes and be prepared to wear a face shield and apron. You will be standing at the workbench during the workshop.
Advanced Workshop - Making your own pens and acrylic blanks
This is a 3 day workshop over non-consecutive days
Day 1 you learn how to make and prep wood blanks as well as how to cast your own acrylic blanks using pressure as well as vacuum chambers.
Day 2 you will open the chambers, prep your blanks and get everything ready to turn your blanks into pens. You will also turn the wood blanks you prepped into pens.
Day 3 you will then turn the acrylic blanks you made into colorful, exciting new pens!

Libertyville Maker Space is a 3,000 square foot facility to provides tools and education in various arts - wood, glass, photography, laser cutting/engraving and ceramics.
