About Washington Monument
Eighteen months and $6 million: that's what it took the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy to return the Washington Monument to its former glory. After being closed since 2010, that restoration effort enabled the grand re-opening on July 4, 2015—exactly 200 years after the Monument's original cornerstone was laid. Now, visitors are welcome back inside, past the bust of George himself, past the bronze plaque memorializing the centennial, past the gallery space with its virtual touchscreen tours of the Monument's exterior and interior, and to the foot of the stairs. Because here the most thrilling part of history is the view from the top. After climbing a tower consisting of 227 marble steps, visitors can look out over the city of Baltimore from roughly 250 feet above sea level.
