About Noah's Ark

Jama Hedgecoth opened the original Noah's Ark in 1978 in Ellenwood, GA. By 1990, the organization had outgrown that small farm so Jama moved her entire family—and all the animals—to Locust Grove. Today, Noah's Ark sprawls across 250 acres and is home to more than 1,500 abused, unwanted, and neglected animals. Read on to learn more about this non-profit organization:

  • The mission: Bringing children and animals together with the purpose of providing unconditional love, unconditional service and a future full of hope.

  • Visit: The sanctuary is set up like a park, with paved pathways winding around the property so guests can easily explore. Noah's Ark never charges admission—however, it costs $33,000 per month to feed and care for the animals, so it collects money through tours, donations, and other fundraising efforts.

  • The animals: A mix of exotic and farm animals call Noah's Ark "home," including birds, wolves, foxes, primates, reptiles, and, of course...

  • BLT: BLT refers to Baloo (an American Black Bear). These animals arrived at Noah's Ark in 2001 after they were rescued as cubs from an Atlanta home. Despite their obvious differences, Baloo and Shere Khan remain best friends to this day.
