"What needs to be proved today is that as long as a man has a car, he can do anything and go anywhere. Is there anyone who will undertake to travel this summer from Peking to Paris by automobile?"
On January 31, 1907, these two sentences appeared in the French newspaper Le Matin. They soon amounted to more than words, though, because the fledgling automobile industry took them as a challenge, and by June 10, five cars were revving up in current-day Beijing for an epic 10,000-mile-long race. In the end, the winner was an open-air car driven by Prince Borghese of Italy, and it had been powered by Shell “motor spirit”—one of the company’s earliest terms for gasoline.
Since then, Shell has fueled explorations, expeditions, and many more races, and it continues to do so to this day, with thousands of stations in more than 30 countries powering the lives and adventures of millions of people. The company also continues to innovate, with an ever-greater focus on reducing its environmental impact and developing sustainable energy sources for the future.
