When you want the young people in your life to know you care, give them a day—or several— to remember. No matter their age, there are gifts kids want that will have them jumping up and down—or coolly nodding if they happen to be teens. Check out this chart and kids’ gift guide for age-appropriate activities that will give them a more hands-on sense of fun and fulfillment. Just don’t wait too long: before you know it, they might just be in the next bracket up.

Age: 0–2 | Send Kids to the Petting Zoo

What’s cuter than a fluffy little lamb or a pony’s gentle eyes? A toddler interacting with that animal. At petting zoos, kids get a chance to see animals they may have never seen in person before, and they may even get to pet, feed, or ride them. If that’s not enough incentive for you, just think: you get to remind them about that magical trip for the rest of their lives.

Age 3–5 | Send Kids to a Trampoline Gym

Young kids may as well have motors installed in their bellies for all the energy they seem to run on. Help them convert that spark into air-defying fun at a trampoline gym. These indoor arenas are covered in bounceable landscaping as far as the eye can see, and often include games like trampoline basketball or trampoline dodge ball. Don’t be surprised if, five minutes in, you start getting asked when the next visit will be.

Age 6–10 | Send Kids to a Children’s Museum

No, a children’s museum is not where you go to learn the stories of our youngest citizens. But unlike adult museums that often stick to a single topic, such as science, art, or nature, children’s museums cover everything that might be interesting to kids—like all of those things. In a single trip, kids might discover how flotation works using tubs of water, why static makes hair stand up, or what kinds of gear firefighters wear. Because there’s no reason fun and learning have to be mutually exclusive.

Age 11–13 | Send Kids Go-Karting

Once kids reach an age when they start thinking human contact is overrated, your kids’ gift idea really needs to bring out the big thrills. When the tween years arrive, a day outdoors at the go-kart track is not only an exciting change of pace but also a great exercise in trust, as kids get to drive their own vehicle in a safe, monitored space. It’s a win for everyone: they get that sense of autonomy they crave while still knowing they wouldn’t have gotten there without someone else’s excellent forethought—yours.

Age 14+ | Send Kids for Music Lessons

There’s nary a teen who doesn’t think they should be a rock star, whether they envision jamming on an electric guitar or an oboe. For a cool gift idea for kids, give their dreams flight with music lessons that will have them playing along to their favorite radio or Rachmaninoff hits in no time. When they make it to the stage someday, they’ll know who to thank.
