Profiles of my five favorite online hangouts, including Into the Gloss (for everyday tips and tricks) and Maskcara (for makeovers that prove the power of basic products).
Anyone can start a beauty blog—I bet even Donald Trump has one somewhere. But sifting through all that online content for the legitimate, helpful sites can be an intimidating task. I’ve found some gems, though, thanks to a mix of friends, work research, and aimless Instagram clicking. Below are my five favorite sites.
Girls with Curves: Best Fashion for Curvy Figures
The blogger: Tanesha Awasthi, who designs her own
upscale fashion line and encourages body positivity by showing off her curves.
Her Instagram: @girlswithcurves
Her focus: Fashion and beauty. I love her fashion posts best, though—she throws all the “rules” for curvy girls out the window. She will rock a
crop top or
horizontal stripes and look great doing it.
One look she’s inspired me to try: Mixing patterns. Tanesha has a great eye—I would never normally think to pair
tweed with lace, but her black-and-white palette makes the two textures look like a natural pair.
Maskcara: Best Makeovers
The blogger: Cara, a makeup artist (and
Allure's Beauty Blogger of 2013)
Her Instagram: @maskcara
Her focus: She posts mostly about makeup—entire looks, her favorite products, and DIY projects, like how to make your own lip scrub. She’s a young mom, too, and she often writes with busy moms in mind.
Recurring feature I love: Makeover Mondays, especially
this one. It really shows how products can enhance your features—the finished makeup doesn’t look vampy or overdone. The subject just looks like a more polished, better rested version of herself.
August Skin: Best Product Reviews
The blogger: Ashley Weatherford, who has been praised by
Allure and Refinery29 and whose adorable about page explains that she was “introduced to steam facials and clay masks by her father … [and] spent many childhood evenings pampering herself while guzzling Nesquik and watching Nickelodeon.”
Her Instagram: @augustskin
Her focus: Beauty. She reviews products and interviews beauty experts you might not have heard from before, like
Michelle Obamas aesthetician or
Jalina Porter, an NBA dancer.
Product she’s featured that caught my eye: Cod liver oil. Apparently it’s full of retinol, and it makes your skin glowy. The formula she highlights has some lemon flavoring, so apparently it doesn’t always just taste like livers.
Cult of Pretty: Best Photos
The blogger: Ann Colville Somma, who works in beauty-product development and innovation when she’s not blogging,
Her Instagram: @cultograms
Her focus: Beauty products (especially new ones, which she’s hip to thanks to her work). She’s also savvy about the science behind them and knows how to interpret an ingredient list.
My favorite recurring feature: Her in-depth
nails coverage.
Here’s her shot of Deborah Lippmann’s nails for Kate Spade at September's New York Fashion Week. Those tips are hard to describe, but I’d call them a tri-tone, pointy take on the french manicure? Maybe.
Into the Gloss: Best Everyday Tips and Tricks
The blogger: This is more of an online magazine, but the founder and director is Emily Weiss, who has worked at
Teen Vogue and
Vogue. You can find out more about her in this interview with
The Cut, where she talks about cohabiting with her boyfriend and keeping her beauty products organized.
The Instagram: @intothegloss
The focus: This blog has a broader scope than the others—it covers fashion, hair, makeup, and food. Plus
wrinkle-fighting pillows.
Product this blog introduced into my life, forever improving it: Pearly Wipes! They’re peppermint-flavored wipes, individually packaged, that you wipe across your teeth to prevent wine mouth. They’re the best tiny square party date you’ll ever have.
