Once a year from 2005 to 2008, the streets of San Jose were closed off and repurposed as the San Jose Grand Prix. The main event—Champ Car World Series—turned the civic roadways into a street circuit track where world-class drivers would race through the city, drawing spectators and a weeklong festival of events. 

The San Jose Grand Prix ended in 2008, and today the racers have been replaced with civilian drivers.
