There are no gas stations in Portal, an unincorporated town on the Western side of the Arizona-New Mexico divide. Instead, you'll find the remnants of classic southeastern Arizona: ranch roads, wide skies, high deserts, ranger stations, and other accouterments of the Old West. Cochise County is the Land of Legends—including Geronimo—where mountains of mythical proportions rising from the scrub-grown desert floor. From the mile-high mining town of Bisbee to "Too Tough To Die" Tombstone (the former home of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday) the Cochise communities are drawn together by the common bond of history.
The city lights are as sparse as discouraging words at DD Gamble Guest Lodge, Tom and Alicia Davidson's tranquil 325-acre dude ranch nestled between the cool climes of Chiricahua and the Peloncillo Mountains. Rustic and whimsical rooms are individually outfitted with bespoke appointments like rocking chairs and crochet work to reflect a theme—think: music, cowboy, and birds. Wispy drapes clothe the windows and hardwood spans the floors. Outside, miniature horses and miniature cattle curl up like kittens, cacti bloom in the rock garden, and the grill sizzles in the open air. Pets (including horses) are welcome at this Arizona retreat where all meals are catered with special consideration for those with need for vegetarian and gluten-free fare.
