We think of national parks as wonders of nature, pristine landscapes protected against human encroachment. And most of them are. But Mesa Verde National Park, not far from the Four Corners in Southwest Colorado, is the lone exception. Happened upon by chance in 1888, and parceled off as a national park less than 20 years later, Mesa Verde is the site of more than 4,000 cliff dwellings, homes that were chiseled out of sandstone by Ancestral Puebloans between AD 600 and 1300. It is, perhaps, the most awe-inspiring archaeological preserve in the Southwest, if not the United States.
Situated inside the park and decked out in Old West charm (handcrafted furniture, Native art and design), Far View Lodge features 150 rooms, each one with a private balcony and complimentary wireless Internet. And without the distraction of in-room TVs and cell phone service, you'll be fully immersed in the true essence of this wildlife-rich area. Standard rooms are fit with one king, one queen, two queens, or two double beds, plus a refrigerator and coffeemaker for your convenience.
Nearby you'll have three different—all excellent—dining options. Metate Room Restaurant, winner of an Award of Culinary Excellence in the area of sustainable cuisine, features a contemporary menu inspired by traditional Puebloan fare (think elk shepherd's pie with green chili mashed potatoes) and a comprehensive wine list. The Far View Terrace Café and the Spruce Tree Terrace Café both offer casual cafeteria-style dining and the same delicious regional cuisine.
