The Destination
Outhotonnook, a Native American term meaning "over the mountain," was the original name of what is now Sheffield, Massachusetts. Although difficult to pronounce, it's still fitting today: this small town in the Berkshires region has a laid-back sophistication with a "no muss, no fuss" attitude and mountain vistas for miles. A place where folks come to appreciate life's simple pleasures, Sheffield has the area's most abundant concentration of antiques stores and working farms—and bustling New York and Boston are little more than two hours away by car.

The Digs
Set amid two acres of tranquil woodlands, Ramblewood Inn envelops visitors in its homespun charm from your first moment of arrival. The chalet-style log home is minutes from the serene Berkshire Trout Pond and features warm country décor. "Our rooms were very comfortable and clean with a great view of the autumn woods which surrounded the place," a former guest remembers. "The style was a modern log cabin so the place was not stuffy—the chairs and sofas were very comfortable and the living room became ours to share for happy hour and late-night conversation."

The Diversions
In warm-weather months, you'll be in a prime spot to hike or bike the Appalachian Trail from Mount Everett, or take a canoe out on the nearby lake. From Butternut to Catamount and several more ski/snowboard resorts in the immediate vicinity, powder hounds will have plenty of options to choose among come wintertime. If your idea of sport has more to do with scoring a priceless heirloom, Sheffield is an antiquer's dream. Susan Silver specializes in English and Continental formal furnishings from the 18th and 19th centuries; Kuttner carries everything from hooked rugs, folk art, and American antiques; and Samuel Herrup deals in all manner of ceramics, textiles, metalwork, paintings, and furniture.

  • "The contemporary log cabin construction... imparts a distinct warmth and conviviality often lacking amid the antiques-filled premises elsewhere. Exposed wood sets the cheerful mood, which is further enhanced by the hospitality of [the] innkeepers."
