The Destination
Resting just between Richmond and Washington, DC, Orange, Virginia, and its surrounding vineyards offer what Wine Enthusiast Magazine declared as one of the top regions to visit in 2012. The rolling Shenandoah Valley offers ideal pockets of microclimates that have enabled the region to produce unique varietals that rival those in Napa—but visitors also find the lush pastoral scenes equally palatable. Close to a bevy of historical sites like Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, Orange is a golden opportunity to drink up culture as well as some vine-ripe vino.

The Digs
Nestled in a storybook setting 90 minutes from Washington, DC, the Inn at Westwood Farm is a 1910 farmhouse set on 15 scenic acres. Rooms are outfitted with fine Yves Delorme linens and down bedding, newly burnished heart pine floors, and private bathrooms with complementary robes, hand-milled soaps and Gilchrist & Soames bath products. Light-filled common areas boast a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary décor. In-room coffee-and-tea service is available, and breakfast served in the dining room routinely draws from locally sourced and organic ingredients when the season permits.

The Diversions
• Sip in the scene at nearby wineries: Barboursville Vineyards, Pollak Vineyards, Early Mountain Vineyards, and Veritas Vineyards
• Walk to James Madison's Montpelier across the road from the inn
• Drive the scenic Constitution Highway to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello
• Savor slow-roasted hickory-smoked pork shoulders at the locally famous The Barbeque Exchange

  • "A perfect location for a history buff, a wine lover, and anyone else who needs to rejuvenate. Elizabeth and Jay were the greatest hosts and served a fabulous breakfast. The rooms were cozy, perfectly decorated, and provided the ideal getaway."
