The Destination
Stationed at the southern tip of the Garden State, Cape May is known for its gorgeously preserved Victorian houses, their wide verandas practically begging to be used on lazy afternoons. While the city's celebrated identity still rests in its candy-colored ice-cream shops and stately homes, this Jersey Shore destination has recently welcomed a slew of modern additions, including beachside yoga and dimly lit nightspots.

The Digs
Though it predated the Victorian era by about 20 years, Congress Hall is no less of a Cape May icon. Tall white columns frame the lemon-chiffon facade of this grand dame hotel, built in 1816 and dubbed The Big House by its first owner, an apt title to be sure. A popular holiday destination since the dawn of the republic, this renowned retreat has housed a number of presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant and Benjamin Harrison. Today it's a favorite wedding destination, thanks to its sprawling manicured lawn, ocean views, high-end dining, and lively nightlife. Bright and spacious with an air of historic elegance, guest rooms feature Belgian linens, Aveda bath products, and complimentary high-speed wireless Internet access.

The Diversions
After an afternoon of antiquing in this charming seaside town, schedule a massage session at the Sea Spa, where Escapees enjoy a 15-percent discount on one treatment. Then, raise a glass at The Brown Room, where the large fireplace, ebony bar, chocolate lacquered walls, and antique oil paintings create a cozy atmosphere. In the morning, follow the smell of house-roasted coffee and bacon down to The Blue Pig Tavern.

  • "Its motto, 'Simple, relaxed luxury,' is apparent everywhere from the chic lobby with its yellow walls, sisal carpet, and black wicker furnishings to its sunny guest rooms with gaily striped carpets and Frette linens."
