The Destination
The heritage of the American South beats steady as a drum in Lexington, Virginia—the heart of the Old Dominion and home to the Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University. Mountain and valley roads wind through natural forests and into a downtown teeming with art galleries, small shops, cafés, and historic sites—the burial grounds of Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, and the George C. Marshall Museum, to name just a few. A leisurely carriage ride down tree-lined lanes or a walk through the manse-laden campuses and blooming berry farms is like stepping back in time. Still, active types can find adventure in the Rockbridge Area amid the natural highs of Goshen Pass rapids and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The Digs
You'll be greeted by name at 502 South Main Bed & Breakfast, Russ and Mary Stuart Harlow's 1885 home that exhibits heaps of Southern hospitality with a hint of European flair. Rockers nod to and fro on the front porch and fresh-cut flowers adorn the guest rooms, which boast sitting areas and marble bathrooms. The immaculate premises are proof-positive that the hosts can clean house, but it's Russ's piano playing and Mary Stuart's three-course breakfasts that show they know what makes a house a home.

  • "Our room was delightful—large, meticulously maintained, and quiet... The location is super-convenient for walking into town for dinner or shopping. And you will relish the opportunity to walk after a tremendous breakfast!"
