The Destination
Stepping out into California's Gold Rush region is like stepping onto a movie set—and for good reason; countless Hollywood Westerns were filmed right here in these hills. Set amid an iconic backdrop of rusty-red soil peppered with Joshua trees, this land is home to countless boomtowns with a ghostly and golden past. From saloon fronts frozen in time to the orange and pistachio fields beyond the mountains, this slice of Americana can't help but rope in your imagination.

The Digs
The Leger, one of the oldest operating hotels in California. This 161-year-old property, originally built to house big-money-seeking miners, sits in the tiny town of Mokelumne Hill, deep in the heart of the state's Gold Rush region. Here, you'll have your pick of a variety of rooms: There's the antique-filled Garamendi Suite, which boasts a marble fireplace and pillow-top bed; the George's Room, with its cozy rocking chair, flowered wallpaper, and feather-down comforters; and the quaint yet contemporary lavender-hued Fischer Suite or the plush Peek Room. The on-site, stone-wall dining room serves up fare like artichoke bruschetta with basil, a burger topped with smoky-sweet barbecue sauce, bacon, and cheddar, or crisp, beer-battered fish n' chips—the perfect prelude to a dip in the shaded outdoor pool.

The Diversions
• Nosh on snacks from the Nut House
• Sip varietals at Renegade Winery
• View the Petroglyphe Gallery, which houses oil paintings, ceramic works, and bronze sculptures
• Get the gang together for a game in the hotel's billard room

  • "The rooms are well-appointed with antique furniture, and some rooms open onto a large veranda that overlooks the sleepy little main street. I’ve always found this hotel to be a definite jewel in the Gold Country region."
