Dramatic Saharan landscapes and intricate Islamic architecture—explore a world of wonders in Marrakech and beyond.

The Destination
A land of dizzying extremes. The heat of the teeming marketplaces in Marrakech, the cool climes of Berber villages in the Atlas Mountains—for adventurous travelers looking for the ride of a lifetime, a trip through this North African country is nothing but high notes.

Culture and cuisine in Marrakech. Lose yourself in the labyrinthine streets, where medieval history continues to define the frenetic present. Cultural landmarks—including the Koutoubia Mosque and Jemaa el-Fna square—help set the stage, but it's the stalls and alleys of the Medina marketplace where the real show takes place, as residents haggle over everything from cuisine to crafts.

Escape the city for stunning vistas. Outside the city, the atmosphere is far more serene. Follow the snow-capped Atlas Mountains all the way to the sand-swept Sahara—the landscape holds treasures of all varieties, from the captivating kasbahs in the fortified city of Aït Benhaddou to the jaw-dropping natural scenery of Dades Canyon and Tondra Gorge.

Kasbahs and markets, deserts and mountains—Morocco is meant to be explored. See this North African gem's fascinating landscapes on a ten-day trip courtesy of Encounters Travel.

The Itinerary
day 1: board your flight
Those who purchased an air-inclusive package will board an overnight flight from the US to Morocco.

day 2: arrive in marrakech or casablanca
Upon touchdown, your English-speaking guide will meet and transfer you from the airport to the hotel to settle in and start exploring the city. For those who opt for the air-inclusive package, airport transfers to the hotel are provided, including the 2.5-hour transfer from the Casablanca airport. For independently scheduled arrivals, check the fine print.
Overnight at the Red Hotel Marrakech.

day 3: tour the city
Begin the day with a trip to the iconic Koutoubia Mosque, topped by a minaret that has become a symbol of Marrakech. From there, you'll visit the Saadian Tombs and Bahia Palace, both known for geometric mosaics and intricate craftsmanship that exemplify Islamic architecture. The afternoon brings you to the souks—marketplaces filled with bustling stalls and delicious food—in and around Jemaa el-Fna Square.
Overnight at the Red Hotel Marrakech. Breakfast provided.

day 4: desert landscapes
In the morning, you'll hop on a sightseeing bus for the spectacular drive over Tizi n'Tichka—the highest pass in North Africa at an elevation of 7,415 feet. Continue on to Morocco's best-known kasbah at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aït Benhaddou, where you can snap photos of this fortress carved from cliff rock. Finally, you'll reach Ouarzazate, known as "the place of no noise." The town is perched on a desolate plateau on the fringes of the Sahara Desert and has provided the setting for many major films.
Overnight at the Hotel le Fint. Breakfast provided.

day 5: go deeper
Start with a drive along "the road of 1,000 kasbahs" en route to Boulemane, stopping to visit the beautiful Amerhidil kasbah along the way. After reaching Boulemane, you'll visit the Dades Canyon and take in awe-inspiring views of the desert from its ledges. The tour brings you to the oasis town of Tinghir for the evening. The rest of the day is typically spent eating with one of the guide's families, visiting their home, and learning about traditional rural life in Morocco.
Overnight at the Hotel Saghro. Breakfast and dinner provided.

day 6: camp like a nomad
The day's adventure commences with a trip to the magnificent Todra Gorge, and then follows a route through the Atlas Mountains. Switch to four-wheel-drive vehicles for traversing the sand dunes on the way to Merzouga, where you'll watch the sun set over the Sahara Desert and settle in at a traditional Berber camp—a true highlight of your trip.
Overnight at a traditional Berber camp. Breakfast and dinner provided.

day 7: scenic drive
You'll eat breakfast with your Berber hosts before continuing through the desert to Rissani, the birthplace of the ruling Alaouite Dynasty. Switch back to the bus for the drive to Erfoud, the administrative capital of the region known for its idyllic location between the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert. Finally, you'll arrive in the town of Zagora to spend the night.
Overnight at the Palais Asmaa. Breakfast provided.

day 8: back to marrakech
After breakfast, you'll cross the imposing Draa Valley, venturing to the village of Tamegroute—an important site for Sufi Muslims—and then on to Ouarzazate. An afternoon drive will transport you over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and back to Marrakech.
Overnight at the Red Hotel Marrakech. Breakfast provided.

day 9: don't set an alarm
Explore Marrakech at your leisure, or take one of the optional excursions for an extra cost. We recommend a hot air balloon flight, desert quad biking, a tour of the Berber villages, or a visit to the coastal town of Essaouira.
Overnight at the Red Hotel Marrakech. Breakfast provided.
