About Create in Clay School of Ceramics

Entrenched in the eclectic North Oakland and Berkeley art scene, Create in Clay School of Ceramics unites a fine-arts gallery of locally produced wares and an art-instruction facility under one roof. Inside the roomy studio, master ceramicists impart pottery-forging know-how to students, who perch behind 10 ceramics wheels and multiple hand-building stations as they create, glaze, and fire custom pieces. The seasoned artisans tailor each tutorial’s subject matter to guests’ individual skill level, striving to keep class sizes small to ensure unrestricted interaction and afford pupils the chance to ask questions about what to do when clay is haunted by ghosts.

In terms of kids: This Is real clay not play doh and can be really hard to manipulate. Will take a lot of patience and project can easily get messed up. It was hard for my son because you're supposed to shove and squeeze the clay and its almost difficult for a grown-up to do. But that being said he still loved the experience and wanted to return to do more.

Great classes! Very good beginner classes as well as tweaking technique. I have been taking classes closer to home, but was continuing to have problems centering. Lauren really helped me understand much better and it was much easier for me.

I am looking forward to returning to Create in Clay. Our teacher, Jazmyn, was knowledgeable, helpful, and cheerful and the small class size allowed her to work with each student. I had a wonderful afternoon.

This class was FUN FUN FUN! Our instructor, Lauren, was informative, patient, encouraging and personable. I recommend, however, trimming your fingernails fairly short before you go. I failed to do this and my nails sabotaged some of my creativity until I finally ripped them off. The Create in Clay class is not suitable for people who have serious back problems. If you can lean over with elbows on thighs for prolonged minutes then you will be fine, but my friend who has steel rods and a fused spine at her waist suffered to get through. She still had fun. If it weren't for the fact that I travel in my RV year round, I'd be down at Create in Clay making something new every month.
