While nearly every menu name-checks farms, Todd Gray of Equinox was committed to sourcing locally more than a decade ago, long before it was a fad. Let this culinary pioneer take you on a casual tour of the area's best ingredients with an exclusive four-course dinner with wine and beer pairings, plus live music by the alt-country band The Walkaways, at LivingSocial's 918 F Street ($74). Gratuity and all other fees are included.
Gray, who is also the culinary director for Salamander Hospitality and oversees Muse at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, will focus on the Mid-Atlantic "trinity"—oysters, crab, and rockfish—and during dinner, he'll talk to guests about food from the Chesapeake region. Start with a duo of oysters: baked Chincoteagues with pancetta and Gruyere and fried Rappahannocks with truffle mayo, both paired with a cherry Champagne bellini. Move to a sandwich of soft shell crabs with gem lettuce, preserved lemon remoulade, and Old Bay-spiced potato chips, all washed down with a can of DC Brau beer. Dive into a plate of pan-roasted rockfish with lump crab and finished with pecan butter and grilled asparagus, a dish that comes with Chardonnay. Finish the night by pairing sparkling dessert wine and shortcake covered with marinated Blue Ridge strawberries and white-chocolate-and-vanilla cream.
Kids can get in on the fun, too, at the 918 Clubhouse, across the hall from the dining room, with pizza, cookie decorating, and arts and crafts under the eye of trained staff (ages 5 and older; $39 per child). Or, make a night of it with a stay for two adults Friday, Saturday, or Sunday at the Courtyard by Marriott Convention Center, which includes a bottle of wine, breakfast for two at the hotel, and $10 for any of the four Washington-area Gordon Biersch restaurants ($219 additional).
Eating local ingredients is one thing. Eating Maryland- and Virginia-sourced seafood transformed by a Virginia native, one of DC's best chefs, and a five-time James Beard Award nominee, is a truly local experience.
