The Destination
At just one square mile and comprising fewer than 500 residents, the blink-and-you'll-miss-it town of Calhoun, Tennessee—set on the banks of the Hiwassee River—sits just 45 minutes northeast of Chattanooga, making it the perfect place to get away from the go, go, go of the city. But it's not all naps and rocking chairs here. In the rolling foothills of Eastern Tennessee, Calhoun offers quick access to Cherohala Skyway, which is popular with motorcyclists; the Ocoee River, where whitewater rafting guides abound; and the three-and-a-half-hour Hiwassee River Rail Adventure, which takes passengers on a 50-mile railroad ride around the scenic Hiwassee Loop. And at the end of the day, you can wind down in nearby Delano with a glass of wine at Savannah Oaks Winery, or at a number of restaurants just north in Cleveland.

The Digs
Perched on a hill overlooking the Cherokee National Forest and the Hiwassee River, the Pinhook Plantation House is reminiscent of times past. It was, after all, built in 1810 and features a number of period touches, such as four handmade brick fireplaces, pine flooring, and antique furnishings. Each suite features a private bath, a king-size bed with handmade quilts, and views of the river below. Wake up to a gourmet three-course breakfast, which might include stuffed pears, French toast, and fresh ham.

  • "Beautiful inn! Views were incredible, food was delicious, atmosphere was cozy, and hospitality was impeccable."
