The Destination
Named after the storied Massachusetts colony when it was incorporated in 1763, the small town of Plymouth, New Hampshire is a classic slice of New England Americana two hours from Boston: A quaint downtown features wholesome shops and a movie house, and if you're hungry, tasty diner food and a cup of coffee are steps away, too. While local art galleries and bookstores round out this college town's main street entertainment venues, Plymouth's proximity mountain trails and rolling farmland mean that outdoor enthusiasts can find a year-round natural haven here also.

The Digs
With four-poster beds layered in bright quilts, exposed wood walls adorned with colorful art, and sitting areas of overstuffed chairs and pillows, the rooms of The Common Man Inn & Spa are warm, traditional retreats. Built in a former 1890s birch wood mill, the fireplace rooms, lofts, and signature suites have king-size beds, extra sinks and mirrors in the bedrooms, and televisions. While the loft rooms sleep up to eight throughout two stories, the cozier suites sleep up to four. After a day of exploring, return to the inn's restaurant, Foster's Boiler Room, for a cup of clam chowder by the fireplace.

The Diversions
Hike the 5.6-mile loop of the New Hampshire Heritage Trail
• Have lunch at Main Street Station, a diner that opened in 1946
• Visit the Bonnie Brae Farm, the largest Red Deer farm in New Hampshire
• Hunt for antiques at Red Gate Farm

  • "We stayed three days during a recent New England visit and would return in a heartbeat. The building was once a wood products factory and has been converted to wonderfully designed inn... The in-house restaurant has excellent food."
