The Destination
Costa Rica's reputation as an Eden for eco-tourism is well deserved. More than 500,000 species—roughly four-percent of the planet's total—are represented within its borders, making this Central American nation Earth's most biodiverse. Though the country contains 20 national parks, it owes its eco-cred to the smallest among them: Manuel Antonio. This 1,700-acre rain forest packs an eye-popping punch with flashy-feathered toucans, wild beaches, and stands of bamboo reaching 30 feet high. Among its most famous residents are iguanas, sloths, and squirrel monkeys, which Lonely Planet calls "the cutest fur balls you have ever seen."

The Digs
Parador Resort & Spa—named Costa Rica's Leading Hotel at the 2011 World Travel Awards—is set on 12 acres of lush rain forest and Pacific coastline just outside Manuel Antonio National Park. The eco-friendly resort (boasting the Costa Rican Tourism Board's highest sustainability rating) sports three ocean-view swimming pools, a tennis court, a full-service spa, and several bars and restaurants. While all guest rooms are furnished with cushy beds and private balconies, some wow with ocean views, Jacuzzi tubs, and plasma TVs, too.

  • "This place was unbelievably great! The service at the hotel was fantastic... The setting of the resort is in the middle of a rain forest—and it is absolutely gorgeous! It was even better than the photos!"

  • "Despite being a large, resort-style hotel, this place has earned '5 Leaves' in the CST Sustainable Tourism program. The new executive chef here has also really improved the dining experience at all of the hotel's restaurants."
