The Destination
The summer home of presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy, the storied beach town of Newport, Rhode Island, boasts the cachet of the Hamptons, the beauty of Cape Cod, and the history of Williamsburg. Founded in 1639, the city is perhaps best known for its Newport Mansions, a collection of beautifully preserved 19th century estates scattered throughout town. But it's far from stodgy here. Newport is home to the White Horse Tavern, one of the oldest pubs in the country, and it's known in some circles as the Sailing Capital of the World. Add to that a handful of great beaches, the Newport Cliff Walk, and a smattering of classic New England seafood restaurants, and it's clear—Newport knows how to summer.

The Digs
Escape to one of two Newport Bed & Breakfast Inns: the Black Duck Inn or the Newport Blues Inn. The Black Duck is the most modern of the two, featuring seven rooms and suites decorated in contemporary furnishings with an eye on the past. The restored Newport Blues Inn comprises 12 rooms, each with hardwood floors and elegant furnishings. Rooms at both inns are appointed with designer linens, private bathrooms (some with Jacuzzi tubs), and flat-screen TVs.

The Diversions
• Head to the Newport Mansions for a peek at 11 historic homes, which span from Colonial times to the Gilded Age and feature beautifully landscaped lawns, tours, and a look back at Newport's past
• Savor a cup of clam chowder and a pulled-pork sandwich at Newport Blues Cafe––named the top entertainment in town for ten years and counting by Newport Life Magazine
• For a more refined time on the town, tuck into native lobster with coconut rice, piquillo peppers, and a hint of curry at Tallulah on Thames, a swanky two-year-old restaurant that focuses on locally sourced, seasonal dishes.

  • "Simply stated, it was fabulous and walkable to many restaurants. Immaculate. Wonderful experience."
