The Destination
Nicknamed the "Maple City" in honor of the Indians who once made syrup in the area, the Pennsylvania town of Meyersdale has always respected its ties to the land. Aside from its sweet syrup—which has its own festival in early spring—this classic Americana community prides itself on its trails: The 135-mile Great Allegheny Passage unfolds from the city's place in the Casselman River Valley, and acts as an ode to the surrounding natural vistas and architecture. Thousands of visitors per year lace up their hiking boots or hop on their sturdy two-wheeler for the journey, which includes passing under the Big Savage Tunnel, a feat of the Gilded Age, or gliding past towering windmills cloistered on the hills.

The Digs
Set in downtown Meyersdale, the Morguen Toole Company embodies the understatedly cool attitude that comes with being a pub, a hotel, a restaurant, and an events space in one. Established in a four-story building that dates back to the 19th century and was re-opened in 2011, the Morguen is a mix of classic taste and modern style. Exposed brick walls and dark-wood accents can be found throughout the property, and while the hotel rooms are more eclectic, with bunk beds and a mix of private bathrooms and communal bathrooms, these hostel-style spaces suit all needs and comforts. After a long day on the trails, order a beer at the bar, and then choose from a selection of hearty meals at The Alley Door.

The Diversions
Grab your cycling gear and head to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland, Maryland, where a crew of friendly guides will pick you up and shuttle you and your gear to Confluence, Pennsylvania. From here, you'll begin your journey along the Great Allegheny Passage—named the Best Fall Trip in National Geographic Adventure Magazine—before bunking up at the Morguen Toole Company in Meyersdale for an evening of brews and scary stories: Your trip includes a beer tasting and a guided ghost tour. Later, cruise through the Big Savage Tunnel, the Borden Tunnel, and across the Mason-Dixon Line.

  • "Like many of the nation's multi-use trails, the GAP was created from an abandoned rail line. (The last train rolled through in 1975). It exists largely thanks to the vision and persistence of the Allegheny Trail Alliance."
