The Destination
Nicknamed "The Big Valley," the Shenandoah spans nearly 200 miles of verdant terrain throughout the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains. Scenic byways give way to a topographical mélange of woodlands, orchards, farmsteads, and undulating mountain ranges that transform before your eyes with each change of season. Nestled in the center of the valley, Staunton, Virginia, is the perfect place to drink in the history of this gorgeous region. "Staunton's National Historic Register red-brick downtown has galleries, a camera museum, an old-fashioned trolley and Tiffany window-lined Trinity Church," says Smithsonian Magazine. "Up the hill at Victorian-era Thornrose Cemetery, there's a separate section holding the remains of almost 2,000 Confederate soldiers, while the band shell in nearby Gypsy Hill Park serves as the summertime home of the 70-piece Stonewall Brigade Band, founded in 1855 to feature the then-novel saxophone."

The Digs
Originally built in 1924 and a member of the Historic Hotels of America, the Stonewall Jackson Hotel & Conference Center embraces the spirit of classic Southern hospitality. After undergoing a top-to-bottom renovation in 2005, this Virginia gem shines brighter than ever with an indoor heated pool, a fitness center, and an 8,500-square-foot business center. Each of the property's 124 rooms showcases the building's unique architectural elements alongside modern furnishings, décor, and artwork. Named after Jackson's favorite horse, Sorrel's restaurant is located just off the hotel's period-inspired lobby. Perfect for a cocktail or a full-scale meal, the restaurant boasts delicious pizzas, fragrant wines, and a variety of farm-to-table fare.
