The Destination
Located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, the town of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, was so beautiful that Thomas Jefferson mentioned it in a letter home to the folks, calling it "one of the most stupendous scenes in nature." Hiking and biking trails crisscross the town, a rich Civil War past draws history buffs, and the river waters sing a siren's song to anglers.

The Digs
Embellished with an expansive wraparound porch for warmer days, The Angler's Inn, an 1880s Victorian-style bed and breakfast, is like a trip back in time. All four Wi-Fi connected guest rooms feature a separate sitting area and a private bathroom, and each is named after a character—historical or fictional—that inhabited Harpers Ferry, lending a charming air to the rooms. Innkeeper Debbi Kelly whips up a full three-course breakfast each morning, which consists of fruit and fresh-baked breads and scones, plus a main course like toasted-almond French toast with spiced bacon. In the evening, you'll be treated to a wine-and-cheese platter to help tide you over before dinner in town.

  • "We had the pleasure of staying here on an overnight trip to Harpers Ferry. It was a really comfortable old house in a charming little town. The innkeepers were wonderful and served a yummy cooked breakfast."
