The Destination
Named one of the top 41 places to go in 2011 by The New York Times, Washington's San Juan Islands are home to awe-inspiring natural wonders, from migrating whales to pristine beaches, as well as a blossoming food scene that celebrates the region's supremely fresh produce. This archipelago in the Strait of Juan de Fuca has three main islands—Orcas Island, San Juan Island, and Lopez Island—each home to some of Washington's most ecologically impressive parks. Inland from the San Juans, the tiny town of Concrete offers just as much wild wonder sandwiched between Lake Shannon and the Skagit River in the Cascades.

The Digs
For a glamorous camping experience—"glamping," as it's often called—in the San Juans, look no further than Wanderlust Hospitality. You'll choose from campsites in Deception Pass State Park on Whidbey Island, Moran State Park on Orcas Island, Spencer Spit State Park on Lopez Island, or Challenger Ridge Winery & Vineyards on the mainland.

At each location—most of which are walk-in campsites—you'll stay in a spacious canvas tent, complete with a real queen-size mattress, luxury bedding, a console table with mirror, a trunk for your belongings, and an indoor/outdoor table with a pair of chairs. Tents share washrooms, but each provides a cooler full of ice, firewood, and lanterns and flashlights.

The Diversions
• Fishing at Moran State Park
• Rafting at Deception Pass State Park
• Kayaking at Spencer Spit State Park
• Wine tasting at Challenger Ridge Winery & Vineyards

  • "There's something magical about traveling to the San Juans. Some people say it's the light, some say it's the sea air, some say it's the weather (temperatures are always moderate, and rainfall is roughly half what it is in Seattle)."
