The Destination
Plunked square in between one of the largest lava domes on earth (Lassen Peak) and the second-highest mountain in the Cascade Range (Mount Shasta), Fall River Mills—population 600—is any hiker's dream. But with one of California's best trout streams flowing right through town, this blip on the map is prime real estate for aquatic pursuits as well, like fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. No wonder they call this Northern California's best-kept secret.

The Digs
Resting on the banks of the Fall River, the Spinner Fall Lodge specializes in peace and quiet—there's no cell service here, just unadulterated Northern California earth and sky. Each of eight rooms is basic, though equipped with Wi-Fi and satellite TV, and the on-site restaurant features a full bar. In the mornings, you'll be treated to a simple breakfast for two, and one afternoon you'll get a picnic lunch to enjoy with your adventures. At night, be sure to spring for a gourmet dinner, which might include Cajun-seasoned roasted duck breast with a Grand Marnier raspberry glaze, Yukon mashed potatoes, salad, and bread (restaurant closes Sunday and Monday).

The Diversions
About 20 minutes west of Fall River Mills, McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park offers excellent hiking with a spectacular payoff: the 129-foot Burney Falls. The park's five miles of hiking trails also link up with the 2,663-mile Pacific Crest Trail, which stretches from Mexico to Canada.

If you've never fished the Fall River, you're in for a treat. You'll get a two-hour boat rental, and the lodge can arrange an outing with one of the area's top fly-fishing guides, or you can give it a shot on your own. Stoneflies, pale morning duns, and hexagenias hatch throughout the summer, drawing large rainbow trout to the surface to make this under-the-radar river one of California's best fly-fishing spots.

  • "Excellent food. Quiet and beautiful. Great fishing guide available. Fun stuff to do in the area. Great trip in all!"
