The Destination
Big things are afoot in Little Rock. Sure, it's been the capital of Arkansas for nearly 200 years and the largest city in the state for nearly as long. But the last decade has seen big growth. The opening of the Clinton Presidential Center in 2004 has revitalized the River Market District, and the city's burgeoning arts scene has breathed new life into North Little Rock. Meanwhile, the culinary landscape has evolved beyond the city's reputation as the Cheese Dip Capital of America—not that we don't love a good cheese dip. One thing that hasn't changed here: the city's historical significance, not only with respect to the civil rights movement but also as a pre-Columbian Native American burial site.

The Digs
Southern comfort meets Old World British refinement at The Empress of Little Rock, an elegant Victorian bed and breakfast listed on the National Register of Historic Places and named "Best of the Best" by AY Magazine the past 11 years. This Queen Anne-style manse offers nine elegant suites, each appointed with a king- or queen-size feather bed and a clawfoot soaking tub or hydrotherapy massage jet shower (based on room choice). Spa suites all include Jacuzzi tubs. Wake each morning to a two-course candlelit breakfast, which might include cream of apple soup and shirred eggs en croûte.

  • "We will never forget our wonderful stay at The Empress. It is a magnificent Victorian mansion with stellar service and the most delicious gourmet breakfast!"
