The Destination
Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains—with the French Broad River slicing its way right through town—Asheville has earned more than a few nods from the likes of Outside Magazine, most recently as one of the country's best river cities. But that's not to say that this vibrant college town just a two-hour drive from Charlotte lacks for cultural attractions. America's largest home, the Biltmore Estate, beckons tourists to its stately grounds on the outskirts of town, while the quaint yellow Thomas Wolfe House pays homage to one of the South's greatest novelists. And with more than a dozen breweries in town, not to mention a live music scene that rivals that of cities five times its size, there's never a dull moment in decidedly laid-back Asheville.

The Digs
Just a 20-minute drive east of downtown Asheville lies the charming town of Black Mountain, home to a variety of Appalachian craft stores, galleries, cafes, and restaurants. And at the Black Mountain Inn, a 19th-century landmark with an illustrious past hosting some of America's most iconic authors, guests are perfectly situated to explore this quaint hamlet. Today, the renovated inn welcomes guests with individually decorated rooms, each outfitted with antique furnishings, private baths, and hardwood floors. Every morning, you'll wake to an included full breakfast for two, where you can nibble on dishes like French toast, steaming-hot soufflé, or crunchy homemade granola. Le Petit Spa, the inn's on-site sanctuary, offers an infrared sauna and treatments like hot stone massages and dry wraps.
