The Destination
Washington, Virginia, isn't far from the nation's capital, but it certainly feels that way. Planned more than 250 years ago by George Washington himself, the Virginia version remains devoid of traffic lights, sirens, and even cell phone service—in fact, the entire town is comprised of just a few sleepy streets in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. But "Little" Washington is equally quaint and refined: tractors and horses share the road with luxury vehicles, and plain one-room churches sit alongside a beautiful historic theater, upscale antique and linen shops, and one of the nation's most celebrated restaurants.

The Digs
Perched atop a hill overlooking Washington and its Shenandoah surroundings, Parma in Little Washington boasts one of the best views in town—not to mention warm, comfortable accommodations. From the common areas downstairs to the gorgeous guest rooms, luxurious brocade and velvet fabrics contrast beautifully with sterling silver accents and neutral tones. The innkeepers pamper guests with gourmet breakfasts each morning, followed later in the day by wine and hors d'oeuvres in the sitting room, then evening sherry and chocolate in your room. If that weren't decadent enough, an on-site spa offers soothing treatments rooted in ancient Indian healing techniques.

  • "Those of us who live in or near the Shenandoah Valley are fortunate indeed, for this is one of the most beautiful areas of the eastern United States. All we have to do is take a Sunday drive in the rolling hills dotted with picturesque small towns."
